What Is Learning Impact Evaluation (Kirkpatrick Model)?
Learning impact evaluation is the process of measuring the effectiveness of training programs, courses, or learning interventions. One of the most widely used frameworks for this is the Kirkpatrick Model, developed by Donald Kirkpatrick, which evaluates learning outcomes across four levels.
The model helps organizations understand whether training improves knowledge, skills, behaviors, and business results.
The Four Levels of the Kirkpatrick Model
- Reaction – Measures learners’ immediate response to training. Did they find it engaging, relevant, and useful?
- Learning – Assesses knowledge or skill gains. Did learners acquire the intended competencies?
- Behavior – Evaluates how learners apply new skills or knowledge in the workplace. Are they changing their behavior as expected?
- Results – Measures the impact on organizational goals, such as productivity, sales, quality, or efficiency.
