What Is Dropout Rate?

Dropout rate is a key training and eLearning metric that measures the percentage of learners who start a course but do not finish it. It indicates how many participants disengage or abandon the training before completing all required modules or activities.

Dropout rate is the opposite of completion rate and is often used to identify issues affecting learner motivation, course design, or training relevance.

How Dropout Rate Is Calculated

Dropout Rate (%) = (Number of learners who did NOT complete the course ÷ Number of learners who started the course) × 100

Example:
If 100 learners start a course and 25 drop out, the dropout rate is 25%.
